Chicago's top dogs

Published July 5 2008

On a hunt for the perfect wiener? Brace yourself, because you've got a lot of dogs to down. Here are six spots you should be sure to hit in your quest for the best.

George's Hot Dogs
1876 N. Damen Ave. 773-227-4034

We give this 60-year-old Bucktown spot high marks for the friendly service and higher marks for the dogs. If you dare branch out from Chicago-style, this is the spot to do it--the chili dogs will knock your socks off.

Hot Doug's
3324 N. California Ave. 773-279-9550

Sausages made with high-quality ingredients and exotic meats--plus a line that stretches half-way around the block on weekends--are the hallmarks here. (If wild game sausages aren't your thing, Hot Doug's does dogs Chicago-style too.)

Morrie O' Malley's
3501 S. Union Ave. 773-247-2700

Marcus Leshock of CLTV's "Metromix" show says this family-run spot in the heart of Sox territory is his favorite hot dog joint in the entire city. Order yours straight-up Chicago-style.

Superdawg Drive-In
6363 N. Milwaukee Ave. 773-763-0660

This Norwood Park throwback (above) is worth a visit for the ambiance alone--but when you tire of gazing at the posing hot dogs atop the roof, a Superdawg (bigger than your average dog, natch) is definitely in order.

Wiener's Circle
2622 N. Clark St. 773-477-7444

The deliciousness of the dogs here is often a topic of drunken debate, but when you're looking for a late-night dog in Lincoln Park, Wieners Circle can't be beat.

Chubby Wieners
4652 N. Western Ave. 773-769-1394

A relative newcomer to the Chicago hot dog scene, this Lincoln Square spot serves 7-inch dogs that also are unusually, as the name says, chubby.
